The Bangladesh Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Human Capital Development (BD Rural WASH for HCD) project is an important initiative to improve access to safe water, hygienic sanitation, and healthy hygiene practices in rural communities. OPCA is implementing the project in Mirsarai, Sitakunda, Fatikchari, and Chhagalnaiya Upazilas, reaching 14,419 beneficiaries.
The project recognizes that safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are fundamental to good health, dignity, education, productivity, and long-term human development. Through community-focused interventions, OPCA supports households in improving their WASH conditions while promoting sustainable hygiene practices and greater awareness of health risks associated with unsafe water and inadequate sanitation.
The project promotes access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, proper handwashing, personal hygiene, household cleanliness, safe water storage, and hygienic practices. Community awareness and behaviour-change activities encourage families to adopt healthy practices and maintain WASH facilities properly for long-term benefit.
Special attention is given to women, children, and vulnerable households, who are often disproportionately affected by inadequate water and sanitation services. Improved WASH conditions can contribute to better health, greater privacy and dignity, reduced exposure to preventable diseases, and healthier living environments.
OPCA emphasizes community participation and sustainable behaviour change throughout project implementation. By engaging households and communities, the project encourages local ownership and strengthens the capacity of families to maintain improved WASH practices beyond the project period.
Through its implementation across four Upazilas, OPCA is contributing to healthier households and stronger rural communities. The project supports the broader goal of human capital development by creating healthier environments where children can grow and learn and families can live with greater health, dignity, and resilience.
